Floating on the ruins of ancient civilization, the Museum Hotel in Antakya is a unique residence for visitors to Turkey.

Museum Hotel is a “unique” getaway in Antakya, Turkey. This building was built on the ruins of a civilization dating back to the 3rd century BC.

Here, from the rooms and walkways, guests can look down on one of the 30,000 artifacts, including the largest single-story mosaic picture ever discovered and intact marble sculpture.

In 2009, the Asfuroglu family decided to build a hotel on the land they owned since 2001. Since the land is part of a protected area in the city, the family has a legal obligation to carry out archaeological surveys before constructing any structures.

They found below the foundation a part of the ancient city of Antioch. The discovery came as a surprise to families, archaeologists and local museums who supervised the survey. 35 archaeologists and 120 assistants pumped mud out and found traces of 13 ancient civilizations, including the ruined walls of 5th-century Roman baths and some mosaic floors.

After a year-long excavation, family members decided to build a hotel with a ground floor of an archaeological park and a living museum. Visitors can step out of the room and admire the civilizations in history. The main problem with building is how to build a hotel above the ruins without damaging them.

The designers have created creative hanging spaces on ancient foundations. The most impressive items on display on the ground floor include a mosaic from the 4th century with an area of 1,050 m2, a 70 cm high sculpture, a rare Pegasus mosaic picture made of natural plant dyed stone.

The hotel has 200 bedrooms, 5 restaurants, bars, fitness center, rooftop spa 3,300 m2 for visitors to relax with 5-star quality. This is also the point for you to admire St Pierre, the first cave church in the world.
