Ocean Park of Hong Kong (China) confirmed that two giant pandas mate at age 14 after a decade of failure and miscarriage.
SCMP reported that the two giant pandas Ying Ying and Le Le in Ocean Park of Hong Kong (China) successfully mate for the first time on 6/4. After repeated miscarriages and miscarriage in the last 10 years, these 14-year-old pandas are in mating season between March and May.
The behavior of Ying Ying and Le Le is considered a breakthrough because the giant panda is sexually mature at 7 years of age in males and 5 years of age in females.

“Since Ying Ying and Le Le came to Hong Kong in 2007 and tried to mate naturally since 2010, they have not been successful until this year, despite years of experimenting and learning.” Michael Michael Boos, executive director of the park’s zoology and conservation operations, said.
“The successful natural mating process today is extremely interesting news, because the chances of getting pregnant through natural mating are higher than artificial insemination,” Boos added.
In 2015, Ying Ying and Le Le participated in a national program in Longan, Sichuan, the largest panda sanctuary in mainland China. There, Ying Ying mated with different pandas and also had artificial implants, while Le Le’s semen was used to breed with other pandas. Ying Ying was soon confirmed to be pregnant, but subsequently miscarried and repeatedly failed in subsequent years.
Boos said Ying Ying’s signs of pregnancy, if any, including hormonal fluctuations and behavioral changes, are expected to be observed as early as the end of June. The park will closely monitor levels. The level of hormones and behavioral changes of Ying Ying during pregnancy ranges from 72 to 324 days. The pregnancy can only be confirmed as early as ultrasound 14 to 17 days before birth.
Ocean Park in Hong Kong has closed since January 26 to minimize the risk of Covid-19 spread.
