Every summer, hydrangeas blooming on Faial Island, the impressive Azores Islands.

Hydrangeas are often known for their green color, but in a mid-Atlantic region, this flower has a vibrant color that makes everyone fall in love with it.

Faial, also known as Green Island, one of the nine islands of the Azores Islands, Portugal. Every summer, hydrangeas wear Faial in blue.

The last active volcano on Faial Island was in 1957 – 1958. The volcanic eruption process forced thousands of residents to leave, but helped the island more than 2 km to the coast. At the same time lava has created a fertile land.

Volcanic eruptions add water, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen chloride to the soil. The soil on Faial Island becomes fertile and rich in acid, creating favorable conditions for hydrangeas to thrive.

Highly acidic soil also helps hydrangeas develop leaves and pigments on the flowers. Every year, this flower blooms and appears in many places on the island.

Hydrangeas grow along roadsides, in fields and spread across hills. The places where this flower blooms are green in each summer.

The end of July and early August is the time when hydrangeas bloom. This year, the Semana rowing festival Mar will be held on August 2 to 9. So you can arrange your schedule to visit the Azores Islands.

During the festival, locals will decorate their houses, gardens and workplaces with green to match the scenery. In Faial, hydrangeas are a regional feature, so picking flowers would be considered illegal behavior.

To see other flowers, visitors can experience the island tour around the Azores and stop at Terceira, also known as Lilac Island. There are not only blue hydrangeas but also many different colors, including purple wildflowers.
